So there are five candidates, each with the ability to get noticed. Whether each should be taken seriously is something else.

The leader by far is eastern Connecticut's former U.S. representative, Rob Simmons of Stonington, who in terms of experience may be as qualified for the Senate as anyone in the country -- Vietnam veteran with two Bronze Stars, CIA officer, Senate committee staff director, state representative for 10 years, U.S. representative for six years, and state government's business advocate. He is well known throughout the state.

A couple of idle thoughts while waiting for the municipal elections to kick into high gear. $30 million. That’s the amount of money that Linda McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, says she’s prepared to spend — and out of her own pocket no less — in order to win the Senate seat now held by U.S. Sen. Christopher J. Dodd.

Because I doubt anyone reading this column, and certainly the writer, has ever seen $30 million listed as the balance of any bank acount in our name, let me put that figure in perspective. That’s enough money to pay for Preston’s municipal and school expenses for two years, with $7 million left over to cover the costs for the preliminary environmental cleanup of the former Norwich Hospital property — and probably still get some change back
