Since Linda McMahon entered the race for U.S. Senate, we have heard many disturbing stories regarding the glorified brutality, illegal drug use and sexual exploitation used to promote the World Wrestling Entertainment empire that she and her husband, Vince, created, and of which she served as chief executive officer.

Those revelations came as little surprise. The WWE was never considered wholesome family entertainment by anyone. It is what it is.

But it did prove to be a successful business venture, producing millions for the McMahons - and that business success now is the cornerstone of her Senate campaign. ...

However, the latest accusation suggesting that McMahon tipped off a suspected steroid-dealing doctor associated with the organization of a federal investigation is a serious concern. At the heart of this controversy is a memo she authored instructing that Dr. George T. Zahorian - later convicted of distributing steroids - no longer be permitted at WWE events and be informed of the federal investigation looking into his activities.

As many have already noted, it raises a question of character.

The McMahon campaign's dismissive response that it's a nonissue because a jury acquitted McMahon's husband and the organization of conspiracy charges falls far short of addressing that more important issue.

Character is important. U.S. Sen. Christopher J. Dodd learned that lesson when he mishandled questions about his character that arose over the Countrywide mortgages controversy. McMahon would be wise to learn from his mistake.

She owes Connecticut residents a better explanation.
